Character Name; Hisao Nakai
Canon; Katawa Shoujo

Canon Point; Hanako's route, right after the chapter 'His Past' where he shows her his scar.
Age; 18

House; Sigyn - His condition and time at Yamaku have given him a definite appreciation for the concept of helping others. Considering his own physical limitations, it would also be fair to say he's a little on the meek side.

Power; Healing - While he never considered being a Doctor in the game, the use of a power that could heal ailments and help people would appeal to him massively. Even if it's magical nature might conflict a little with his otherwise rational outlook. Unfortunately for him he's going to have to deal with a lot of that anyway.

Personality; Hisao is relatively quiet, contemplative and introspective. In fact, it's unlike him to act rashly on most fronts and everything he does comes with a little mental back-and-forth. The occasional time he DOES act rashly, or without thought and consideration, it usually doesn't end well for him. (Read: he gets the Kenji ending.) His quietness isn't necessarily due to shyness - he isn't exactly a reticent sort. In fact it comes from the fact that he doesn't think of himself as particularly remarkable. He has some aptitude for Math and Science, likes to read, played soocer and went to arcades with his friends before his condition became apparent. None of this is out of the ordinary and in fact, when asked to introduce himself to his new class he laments that his introduction is boring. He feels somewhat plain in relation to the other residents at Yamaku - after all, his condition is hard to spot at a glance.

A beautiful winter's afternoon and a cryptic note from the girl he'd been crushing on for some time lead Hisao to his first heart attack. He suffers from Cardiac Arrhythmia (More information on which can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardiac_dysrhythmia ) which has been dormant his entire life. The anticipation for and excitement at meeting Iwanoko - the object of his thus-far silent affections - and the subsequent shock and elation of her confession cause his heart to go into overdrive, beating too fast and too erratically. And this is the start of Hisao's troubles.

A long hospitalization followed in which Hisao had to come to terms with his new-found limitations. Recovery was a long, agonizingly boring process which caused him to take up reading as an escape. He genuinely comes to enjoy it soon enough and it's one of his mainstay pastimes even after leaving hospital. The news that he is to continue his schooling not at his old High School, but at at Yamaku Academy - a school noted for catering to students with special needs of a physical sort - is not taken well initially. At first he's indignant about it but soon realizes the reality of the situation and allows his parents to send him, even if his grievance with the idea is hardly settled.

It wouldn't be unfair to say that Hisao's life becomes at least somewhat defined by his disorder even if he would be loathe to admit it for the most part. He resents it, but is resigned to it all the same. His pill regimen gets to him especially - Seventeen pills a day. He mentally paraphrases one pill bottle label to read "Hisao Nakai - Two tablets daily to stay alive". And every so often, despite his resignation to this regimen of medication, he forgets to take them or neglects them in favor of being elsewhere. He can no longer play Soccer - which was one of the few hobbies he had before his hospital stay - and any sharp impact to the torso, physical overexertion or intense excitement could cause him chest pains or even a heart attack. At one point he is uncharacteristically snappy with Kenji for whacking him on the back by way of greeting because he feels his heart flutter. He feels bad for yelling at the other boy almost immediately being Kenji had not been told the specifics of Hisao's condition. And considering his patience with and tolerance of Kenji and his crazy, paranoid rantings, it shows the level of fear he lives with that something so simple could produce that kind of reaction from him.

Hisao's early life was fairly typical and he developed a somewhat apathetic attitude within it. He was never a big social butterfly, preferring to keep a few close-ish friends and enjoy his time with them as opposed to garnering a large group of acquaintances, and this does carry over to his time at Yamaku, as once he picks a girl to take to the festival he tends to focus pretty closely on them and their immediate friends and so he spends less and less time with the others who've reached out to him in his early days at the academy. His parents worked very long hours and he was often left at home by himself - never left wanting for the essentials or neglected in the traditional sense, but oftentimes without their company. In some ways that made the transition to Yamaku a little easier - he was used to their absence so didn't miss them as much as he might have if he'd had a closer relationship with them and were more used to their presence on a regular basis. However, the loss of his former life does weigh on him somewhat - During his hospital stay, visits from his friends and classmates quickly dwindle and by the time he gets to Yamaku, he has no contact with any of them. While this doesn't come up a lot, he does comment once or twice on the feeling of being forgotten or cast aside.

Hisao is a good person and has a drive to help people. When he befriends Hanako, he mistakes her shyness and skittishness as something that can be overcome with his help. And he wants very much to help her. Despite his, admittedly good, intentions he learns over the curve of this arc that that isn't what she needs nor does she want to feel as though his drive to protect and nurture her is the only reason he sticks with her. This is somewhat a recurring lesson for him throughout the various arcs of the game and at this canon point he's only just starting to realize that he's going about things in a less than ideal manner. He still has a lot to learn about people and relationships and this environment is perhaps one of the more challenging proving-grounds a young man could cut their figurative teeth on.

By this time in his canon he is developing feelings for Hanako but has very little idea how to exactly express them or what they even mean exactly. He is realizing, however, that he has to trust her. Showing her his scar is the best way he can think to let her know that she isn't alone. Unlike hers, his scar is easily hidden, and that's perhaps what makes his sharing of it most important - of all people, he picked her to be the first to see it since his time in hospital. He tells her a little more about his past, and the operation that had to be performed to save his life. Despite spending so much time with her, this is the first time he's reached out to almost anyone in such a meaningful way. He let her into a part of his world that he would prefer to keep hidden and barely think about himself. He hopes she'll return the sentiment in kind but wants it to be clear that that will happen on her terms, in her own time. And after the canon point he's taken from, she does just that.

While Hisao is a genuinely nice person and open about most things, he is pretty guarded about his condition. He dislikes being seen as weak and especially hates the idea of being a burden. Very few people get to hear about what happened to him and generally only if he can't avoid telling them or he trusts them completely. Even admitting he's a little out of shape after his months in hospital and his time taking it easy at Yamaku is a bit difficult. He also dislikes feeling pressured into things and is likely to be somewhat blunt if he feels like he's being taken advantage of. Not angry or upset, just blunt. He has a quick wit and a ready, slightly dry sense of humor to go with it and once he's comfortable with someone he's very open and honest with them. The exceptions being people like Kenji, who he simply placates with silence and the occasional nod before trying to turn the conversation back into something sane.
